Amazon Referral Fees Explained (2026 Rate Card)
The referral fee is the single largest percentage-based cost on most Amazon listings. It is charged on every sale, it scales with your price, and it is easy to under-forecast because it is deducted quietly before your payout.
How the Referral Fee Is Calculated
Referral Fee = Item Price × Category Rate
The "item price" is the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and gift wrap, but excluding sales tax. The rate is set by category, not by seller.
Typical Category Rates
| Category | Referral Fee |
|---|---|
| Electronics | 8% |
| Home & Kitchen | 15% |
| Beauty | 8-15% |
| Toys & Games | 15% |
| Books | 15% |
| Clothing | 5-17% |
| Grocery | 8-15% |
| Pet Supplies | 15% |
Most categories also have a minimum referral fee (usually $0.30), which matters when you sell low-priced items.
Where Sellers Miscalculate
- Forgetting the minimum fee — a $2 item at 8% is $0.16, but Amazon charges $0.30
- Applying the wrong category rate — a product listed under the wrong node pays the wrong rate
- Ignoring price changes — raising your price raises the fee in dollar terms even at the same percentage
- Missing promotional pricing — fees are charged on the discounted price, so discounts compound
Referral Fee vs FBA Fulfillment Fee
These are two separate charges:
- Referral fee — a percentage of the selling price (8-15%)
- FBA fulfillment fee — a fixed amount based on size and weight ($3-6 typical)
A common mistake is treating them as one cost. They behave differently as you change price: the referral fee scales, the fulfillment fee does not.
How to Build It Into Pricing
Work backwards. Decide the margin you need, then solve for price:
Price = (COGS + Fulfillment + Shipping + Target Profit) ÷ (1 − Referral Rate − Ad Rate)
If you skip the division step and just add percentages to cost, you will undercharge every time.
