Net proceeds

    How this is calculated

eBay charges a final value fee on the item price plus shipping, a fixed fee per order, and in many regions a separate payment processing charge. Promoted Listings ad rates are applied on top. This calculator adds them together and shows your true net proceeds.

    1. Fee base = item price + shipping charged to buyer
    2. Final value fee = fee base × category rate
    3. Payment processing = fee base × processing rate + fixed fee
    4. Total fees = final value fee + fixed order fee + payment processing + ad fee
    5. Net proceeds = fee base − total fees
    6. Profit = net proceeds − your item cost

What to make of the number

Because the final value fee is charged on shipping as well, offering 'free shipping' and folding the postage into the item price does not reduce your fees — it usually increases them slightly. The real lever is the ad rate: promoted listings at 8–12% are the difference between a profitable and a marginal sale on thin-margin goods.

    Frequently asked questions

Does eBay charge the final value fee on shipping?
Yes. The fee is calculated on the total the buyer pays, including the shipping amount where shipping is charged separately. Structuring a listing as free shipping with a higher item price does not avoid this.
What is the fixed fee per order?
A small flat charge added to each order above a minimum value, in addition to the percentage-based final value fee. It has a disproportionate effect on low-value sales.
Are Promoted Listings fees charged on every sale?
Only on sales attributed to the ad. Since the rate is applied to the item price, a high ad rate on a low-margin item can push the sale into a loss even though the sale itself was successful.
    Do fees differ by category?
Yes. Rates and caps vary significantly, and some categories use tiered structures where a lower percentage applies to the portion of the price above a threshold. Always check the rate for your specific category.
Is tax included in the fee calculation?
Sales tax collected on behalf of the buyer is not part of the fee base. Fees apply to what the buyer pays to you, not to tax remitted to the state.
